JOBS FOR NOVEMBER
Trees & Shrubs
This is an ideal time to plant trees and shrubs in the garden. There is a wide variety of evergreen and deciduous varieties available at our garden centre and our knowledgeable staff will be happy to advise you on the best selection for your particular needs.
For best results, use Levington Rose Tree & Shrub compost when planting. This is also a good time to plant new roses. Avoid planting in a position where roses were previously growing.
Pruning of deciduous trees and shrubs can be carried out this month. Prunus species such as cherries, plums and peaches are best pruned in the spring as they more vulnerable to Silver Leaf disease in the autumn and winter. Evergreens are also best left till spring.
Hanging Baskets & Tubs
It’s not too late to plant tubs and baskets with plants for winter and spring interest. Primroses, pansies, heathers, mini evergreens and ivies are all ideal in containers. The garden centre has a good selection of these plants this month. Why not add plant a few crocuses or miniature daffodils for colour in the spring?
Houseplants
Take care not to overwater houseplants as the days shorten and growth slows down. Pot up hyacinth bulbs and you will have a display in the New Year. Plant containers with Hippeastrum (amaryllis) bulbs for a spectacular show after Christmas.
Feed the Birds!
Wild birds need to be fed now to allow them to build up fat reserves to fight off the cold weather. Bird feeders need to be cleaned out regularly to prevent the spread of disease. Whilst you may think wild birds like bread, this does fill them up but without the energy store that they get from nuts, seeds and fat so to help ensure the future of our common birds. The garden centre stocks a wide variety of bird foods so do check the information on the pack and buy the food they require. It is very important to keep wild birds supplied with a source of fresh water at all times
