Tips to keep your garden blooming while you're away

Even though it's September now, some are still planning a late break, and if it's hot here at home, make sure you cater for you garden and house plants while you are away.  Without water they'll become a dried up, wilting mess, and it'll be so frustrating after months of work getting them to look good! The ideal scenario is for a neighbour to take over the watering and feeding while you're away - letting them harvest any crops and flowers that are ready, in return. However, this isn't always possible, which is why you need a back-up plan. So, for peace of mind, follow my 10 pre- and post-holiday jobs.  Read more...

Getting the most from your flowers!

Bedding containers and hanging baskets should be in full swing by now, with plants eating up any nutrients or feed in the compost. For continued blooms start to feed with liquid or water soluble fertiliser and repeat every two weeks for the rest of the growing season.

GROW YOUR OWN!

A wide range of fruit trees and bushes now in stock including apples, pears, peaches, plums cherries, apricots, quince and nectarines.

Plant of the Week; Bamboo

Plant of the Week; Bamboo

Bamboos are actually grasses with woody stems providing attractive, lush foliage that can be used to add a tropical effect, or a block a view for any garden. They come in all shapes and sizes, most are fully hardy and evergreen and can be grown anywhere in the UK. There are two main types available:

Clumping Bamboo – A well behaved bamboo that forms a nice clump without taking over the garden.

Running or Spreading Bamboo – Often the smaller bamboos that send out roots in many directions and can quickly grow. When planting these bamboos it is recommended that gardeners create a barrier to contain the spread of the roots.

Bamboo requires a fertile, moisture retentive soil that doesn’t get waterlogged. Will grow well in most soils including clay. Plant bamboo in full sun to part shade, away from strong winds.

Edging

Edging

Use a half-moon edger to neaten up your grassy borders and repair any that have broken. Cut the edges inwards so that they sit at a 200º angle. This will stop the grass from spreading into you borders.
